My paintings begin with an experience of nature. I
paint and sketch outdoors when the weather permits, recording visual
information in my sketches, making note of sounds and smells, and
absorbing the mood and feel of the day. If the paint is freezing on my
palette or the driving rain is soaking my paper, I still enjoy immersing
myself in the play of light across the snow or the smell of wet earth.
When I can't work outdoors, I work from sketches, photos, or natural
objects gathered earlier, or I visit nature indoors at conservatories,
museums, even garden shops. I strive to record the healing and uplifting
touch of the natural world in my work in a form that is available even
when the direct experience of nature is not. I paint for everyone--myself
included!--who'd like to be able to spend more time outdoors. Although I
have natural forms and colors in mind as I work, I am more interested in
creating a mood--of calm reflection, joyful exuberance, mystery or
wonder--than in depicting a particular scene or telling a particular
story. My goal is to create a painting that will have the same effect on
the viewer as time spent contemplating nature. I hope you find peace,
renewal, healing and happiness in viewing this work.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY | |
With an undergraduate degree in biology and a longstanding interest in
ecology and environmental studies, Lynne has spent many happy hours
immersed in the images the natural world, but for many years her study of
nature was more scientific than artistic. Upon completing a Ph.D. in
mathematics at the University of Kansas in 1994, Lynne came to Minnesota
to teach mathematics at Carleton College. "Although I loved the warm and
fascinating people of the Carleton College community, the fast-paced,
high-stimulus environment seemed to be out of sync with my more
contemplative and solitary nature," she says. In 2001, feeling that she
had drifted from her core interests, she left Carleton, but with no clear
idea what her next step might be.
Over the course of the next year, she spent a great deal of time
outdoors sketching and writing in a journal, listening for clues to the
new direction her life should take. In the end, she realized that she had
already taken that new direction, as she slowly returned to her childhood
absorption in closely observing and recording the natural world, but now
with the eye of an artist.
Believing that many people share the need for greater opportunities to
contemplate nature, Lynne strives to bring the experience of being
immersed in nature to others through her art. "I feel very fortunate to
have the opportunity to spend time outdoors observing nature," she says,
"and then I get to stretch that experience out when I'm back in my studio
putting the images and feelings into my art. I hope to share that with my
viewers, especially those who aren't able to spend a lot of time outdoors
themselves." Lynne is especially happy to have work on display in the
Hudson Hospital's Healing Arts Program (27 Feb - 20 Jun 2004). "I keep
striving to capture the feeling of being in nature, and observing
closely," she says, "even when a painting doesn't actually represent some
particular object. I hope people come away from my paintings refreshed,
feeling like they've reconnected with the natural world in a healing and
uplifting way."
With original artwork ranging from 3x5" to 21x29", as well as a few
limited editions giclee reproductions of some of her work, she has pieces
to fit any space and budget. As well as offering original artwork based on
her own favorite images, Lynne is happy to work with collectors to create
a work of art based on their favorite images, colors and moods from nature |
